Malagasy Lemur Quest

Our off-beat trip in northern Madagascar is a real adventure, combining tropical islands with rainforest reserves and the chance to view many different species of lemur, birds and plants. We include several very special and remote reserves, where access is only possible on foot.

Rainforest Trails of Marojejy
After Madagascar's colourful capital, Antananarivo, we fly north to the east coast town of Sambava. A short drive takes us inland to the edge of recently established Marojejy National Park. Assisted by porters we trek through villages, deep into the heart of the rainforest to our base camp. Mt. Marojejy rises high above the park (2133m) and we'll spend a full day hiking and wildlife spotting on its verdant slopes. Lemurs we may see here include the silky sifaka, white-fronted brown lemur, dwarf lemur and red-bellied lemur.

Golden Sifaka & Ankarana 'Tsingy'
Leaving Marojejy we drive further north to Daraina Reserve and spend our time nature viewing. The dry forest of Daraina is the only spot in the world where the golden sifaka can be found. Next we drive through gold panning country and into one of the jewels of Madagascar's Reserve system - Ankarana. Here, we'll explore the limestone massif on foot and see amazing eroded pinnacles known as 'tsingy'. Sandford's, crowned and mouse lemur are just some of the species we may catch a glimpse of in this amazing reserve.

Tropical Island of Nosy Be
After a final walk in Ankarana we drive to Ankify on the west coast and take a boat to the tropical island paradise of Nosy Be. Our time in this idyllic paradise is at leisure allowing a choice of optional activities. There's time to take a canoe trip to a black lemur project, or perhaps a less energetic boat ride to Nosy Tanikely Marine Reserve to search for flying foxes, and snorkel over its colourful coral gardens. Ylang Ylang is cultivated in adbundance on the island and a visit to a plantation with sunset over Mont Passot is a must.
